Baby Prez: 3 Weeks

Dear Baby Prez,

You were three weeks old on Tuesday!

Weight:  7 lb 10.7 oz  You aren't gaining weight as quickly as your first week, but you are above your birth weight, which makes Mommy happy!

Health:  You are still a happy and healthy baby.  This week you broke out with little baby acne.  Your dad is really bothered by it even though it is normal.  You also grew out of your newborn sized sleepers because you are too long for them now.

Sleep:  You have been a great sleeper, which Mommy and Daddy appreciate a lot!  You have a tendency to take a long four hour nap during day.  If only you could take a long nap during the night instead!  You have started sleeping about three hours for the first night shift, but still wake up every two hours after that.

Social:  This week you visited Mimi and Grandad's house again and got to spend more time with your cousin.  Mimi and your cousin love to hold you, feed you, and burp you.  In other words, they like to spoil you.  You also met Daddy's best friend and his family and a few more friends of the family.  As usual, everyone thought you were adorable.

Diet:  Breastmilk and formula.  You are such a hungry little monster that we have started supplementing some of your normal feedings with formula.  Even after nursing, you are sometimes hungry enough to drink another ounce of formula, and for you, that's a lot!

Likes:  Sleeping in your Pack N Play.  What a great discovery!  You are not a huge fan of sleeping in your crib, but you do like sleeping in the bassinet part of your Pack N Play.

Dislikes:  You are still not a fan of diaper changes, but otherwise you are a happy camper.

Firsts:  Shooting poop.  For the first time, you pooped during a diaper change, and this was not a normal poop.  You pooped right into Daddy's hand as he changed your diaper, and then when he grabbed a new diaper, you shot poop all over the changing table, changing pad, clean clothes, and Daddy!  Sleeping in the Pack N Play.  We took your Pack N Play to Mimi and Grandad's house, and you love it.  Mommy also loves it.  For the first time since we came home from the hospital, Mommy got to sleep a whole night in a bed (getting up periodically to feed you).

Worst Moments:  Shooting poop.

Best Moments:  Discovering that you like to sleep and hang out in your Pack N Play.  I had almost forgotten how nice it is to sleep in a bed for more than a hour or so each night!

Love,

Mommy

Baby Prez: 2 Weeks

Dear Baby Prez,

This week you turned 2 weeks old!  And our lives have definitely been changed forever.  Not that they weren't already, but now that Daddy and I have started to figure out the routine for the three of us, it has become abundantly clear!

Weight:  We will find out your official weight next Monday at your official two-week doctor's appointment, but you are growing out of your newborn sized pajamas, so you are definitely growing.

Health:  You have a fantastic appetite and look wonderful and healthy.  Mommy, on the other hand, spiked a fever twice and had to start antibiotics just in case!

Sleep:  This week your favorite time to sleep was during feeding time with mommy.  You have developed a tendency to fall asleep while eating.  And I mean you are totally zonked out!  Even when I burp you, you stay asleep.  You love sleeping in Mommy's arms instead of your crib at night.  In fact, you appear to hate your crib right now.

Social:  You got to go on an outing with Daddy to Mimi's house where you met your cousin.  She thinks you are just adorable and even got to feed you part of a bottle.

Diet:  Breastmilk and a teeny tiny bit of formula.  This week you ate like such a champ that we had to supplement mommy's milk with some formula a few times to fill your belly!  You are definitely a hungry, hungry little man.

Likes:  Sleeping in mommy's arms or on daddy's chest.

Dislikes:  You still aren't a fan of diaper changes, but you are getting accustomed to it.  You also hate waiting to eat.  You go from happy to starving in about 30 seconds flat.

Firsts:  Bottle.  Mommy and Daddy supplemented your nursing this week with a bottle a couple of times.  It definitely saved our sanity and filled your tummy when you were still hungry.  Trip.  When Mommy was feeling sick with her fever, you went on your first little trip about 45 minutes from home to Mimi's house.  Mommy was rather emotional to have you away from her, but got some much needed rest.  Projectile spit up.  One of your sleep deprived parents didn't get you burped well enough, and when Daddy put you in your swing, you made a perfect circle with your mouth and out came spit up.  We crossed that off the parenthood list, though I'm sure it will be the first of many times it happens.  Oh yay for bodily fluids.

Worst Moments:  Hearing you cry when you are hungry and need more milk than mommy can give you right now.

Best Moments:  Seeing your sleeping face.  Somehow when I feed you, you fall asleep five minutes later.  Those moments when you are at peace were just precious.  (Then you wake up five to thirty minutes later, hungry.)

Love,

Mommy

Mr. Prez is 1 Week Old!

Weight: 7 lbs 4 oz (only 2% less than birth weight).  You are gaining an average of 41 grams per day, and the expected gain is 15-30 grams per day, so you are already beating the average!

Health: When you were born, you had two low temperatures, but you perked right up once we got to our post-delivery room.  Your APGAR scores were great (two 9s and an 8), and you passed your hearing test with flying colors and had no jaundice.  Each day the pediatrician visited you, she was pleased with how you were doing.  Overall, your health was great despite showing some distress on the heart monitor during labor.  At your first checkup, we learned that your weight gain was awesome and that you were still showing healthy signs.

Sleep:  Your first week, you slept pretty well, waking up about every 2 hours to nurse.  At the hospital you took turns sleeping in mommy and daddy's arms.  Once we got home from the hospital, you still spent much of the night in our loving arms.  You especially love being swaddled to sleep and would only sleep in your crib if you were swaddled like a burrito.  Grandma Vicki stayed up with you a couple of nights so that mommy and daddy could get some extra sleep because usually after your midnight feeding, you stayed awake instead of going back to sleep.  Silly kid!

Social:  You were first held by daddy because mommy was still in surgery, but he brought you over for me to see and coo at, and you were so handsome right away!  Your first visitors were Grandpa T, Grandma V, and Aunt K.  They left Oklahoma right away when they found out you were almost here, so they got to see you just a few hours after you were born.  All three of them stayed for your first week to spend time with you and help out with cooking, cleaning, and keeping mommy sane.  You have been a spoiled little boy with so much family around wanting to take turns holding you.  Mimi and Grandad came to visit on Friday when you came home from the hospital.

At the hospital, mommy's friends from school and a family friend from Kansas also came to visit you.

Everyone said you were SO cute and perfect!

Diet:  Breastmilk.  What a challenge!  For some reason, I thought that since pregnancy was so easy for me that things like breastfeeding would also come naturally, yet it has not.  Despite latching and biting issues, you have been gaining weight well, so I can't be too upset.

Likes: Eating, observing, and daddy's chest.  Naturally, you love nursing even though it's a challenge for mommy.  And you love staring at everyone and everything around you.  You are so alert, which seems to amaze everyone!  And you love to lay on your tummy on daddy's chest.  You practice crawling up daddy.  Since your first day, everyone (including the doctors and nurses) have commented on how strong you are.  Just like daddy.  You might just crawl early.

Dislikes: Diaper changes.  You hate getting your diaper changed and changing clothes.  Every single time, you wailed like a banshee.  We try to change your diaper quickly so that we can calm you down again.

Firsts: Everything!  I mean, literally, everything right now is a first for you.  It's an incredible thing to think about.

Favorite Moments: Watching all of the people who love you dote on you and spoil you, especially your daddy.  Your dad loves hanging out with you, holding you, and cuddling you.  Your aunt always volunteers for burp duty.  Your grandpa snoozed with you on the couch, and your grandma loves cuddling you and cooing at you.

Worst Moments: I think your dad and I would agree that the lack of sleep is the hardest part so far.  During the first week, your grandparents and aunt helped out so much with cooking, cleaning, and errands.  For mommy, recovering from the cesarean section was also an especially difficult part of the week, too.

Love you, little man!

Welcome to the World, Mr. Prez!

After a crazy, crazy birth last week, I am thrilled to introduce our first born son.

My reading of birth stories and research did not prepare me for what transpired. I hope to share his birth story with you soon, but for now, here is a peak at my handsome, amazing son.

{Prepping for the Bean} What's in the Hospital Bag for Mommy?

What should I pack in my "go" bag for the hospital?

Last month, I began researching the most recommended items to pack in my hospital bag or "the GO bag" as my husband calls it.  What I found was that most people seem to pack separate bags for mom, dad, and baby.

So, what's in my hospital bag?

37 Weeks Pregnant

How Mommy Feels:

Big feet are gone!  Okay, that's not entirely true, but they are at least feeling better.  I have been feeling physically great!  Mentally and emotionally, I am getting much more excited and much more nervous.  Nervous for labor, especially.  The husband keeps reminding me that the baby could come any day.  Yikes!  I also put a lot of time into working on the nursery last weekend, so I have felt very accomplished and much more ready than before.  I was also rather proud of myself for putting the swing together to surprise the hubs!

How Daddy Feels:

Daddy is still motivated.  He needs a workshop, so that our house will revert back to a home instead of a construction zone.  I love having a husband that is handy, frugal, and DIYer!  He is like me in that we both crazy excited and kinda anxious.

What the Bean is Doing:

The Bean is getting crowded.  He is just hanging out, getting ready!

Nursery Update:

For the nursery, we have refinished and painted a crib, refinished and painted a dresser, and Daddy is now refinishing and painting a toy chest.  It has been a lot of work for him to remove stain, sand, and paint!  But, this is it!  The end of the line!  As soon as the toy chest is finished, the nursery will be ready for the big reveal.  I can't wait to show off the room!  I'm so proud of all of the work my hubby has put into it!

Hospital Bag:

Still in progress.  My bag is packed...sorta.  There are a few last minutes items I need to add.  Daddy's bag is also sorta packed.  There are a few things on my list for him that need added.  I also need to make sure we have a list of items to pick up on the way out of the house.  Also, the car seat will be installed in the car this next week!
