Dear Mermaid Princess, {6 Months}

Dear Mermaid Princess,

Wow!  A half of a year.  You are growing so fast.  Where has the time gone?  I can't believe you are 6 months old already!

Weight:  20.2 pounds.  Yep, you are a chunk.  The cutest little chunk I have ever seen!

Health:  You are very happy and healthy.  No complaints here.

Sleep:  You're still waking up randomly at around 4am about every 3 or 4 nights, but otherwise you are a great sleeper.  Mommy and Daddy are so blessed.

Social:   You are starting to interact more at daycare.  Your big brother reports that you like to play blocks with him, and Nanny and Love say that you are always happy and cuddly.

Diet:  You are eating food everyday at lunchtime and irregularly for dinner.  I swear it's like trying to feed Fort Knox.  Every bite, you close your mouth or get your tongue in the way.  You like food, but you're just not quite understanding the eating part yet.  Mommy is going to make some big batches of baby food this next week -- carrots, broccoli, spinach...yummy!

Likes:   You love chewing on everything.  I think you're going to be cutting a tooth anytime!  And you are starting to show a preference for Mommy every once in a while, but you love seeing any of your family members -- Daddy, Mommy, Brother, ChooChoo.

Dislikes:  Dropping your toys, being hungry, not being part of the action.

Nicknames: Princess and Peanut (Daddy), Pumpkin (Mommy), Baby Girl (Big brother), Tootsie (ChooChoo)

Milestones:  First Thanksgiving!  It was both your Thanksgiving and our first Thanksgiving away from family.  This year we were blessed to be invited to have Thanksgiving dinner with some friends here in South Carolina.  You were cute and happy the whole time.

Adventures:  Grocery shopping with Mommy and Big Brother is always an adventure.  Your brother loves the carts that look like cars and having steering wheels, but we discovered that your car seat will not fit in the basket of those carts.  And learned it a little too late, so you got to ride like a big kid in the grocery cart for the first time.  You had such a fun time with your brother!

You are also rolling around like a pro.  Whenever you see something across the room that you want, you will just roll yourself around until you get to it.

Love,

Mommy

Dear Mermaid Princess, {Week 24}

Dear Mermaid Princess,

Mommy is finally getting around to your blog updates.  Mommy blogger fail, I know. But it doesn't mean I love you any less.

So, here we go.  Today, you are 24 weeks old.  I can't believe it.  You're growing so fast and it seems like you just arrived.

Weight:  over 17 pounds.  You have the cutest little baby chubs.

Health:  We are all finally over the cold that went around the whole family.

Mermaid Princess relaxing on her handmade quilt
You love your quilt from Gramma Vicki and Aunt Kiley!

Sleep:  You are such a good sleeper, and that makes Mommy SOOOO happy.  Every once in awhile you wake up, but it's rare.  This week you woke up once at 4am, but otherwise, you sleep from about 9-10pm to 7am.

Social:  We really don't know anyone in South Carolina to be social with yet, but you love going to daycare and playing with all of your friends.  They dote on you.

Diet:  You had some runnies with your cold, so you haven't been eating solids for the past week, but you'll start again soon.  You love anything with banana in it just like your brother always did.  And nothing is as good as mommy's milk in a bottle.

Likes:   Bouncing. smiling, trying to sit up, toys!

Dislikes:  Nothing really.  You are truly such a happy little girl.  You cry when you're hungry.  In the past week, you've decided a couple of times that you only want Mommy to hold you though.  And Mommy really does enjoy this little development, except when she's trying to make dinner.

Nicknames: Princess (Daddy), Pumpkin (Mommy), Baby Girl (Big brother)

Milestones:  You're going to reach the sitting up milestone any minute.  You can sit propped up with one hand for about 30 to 60 seconds, and you love it!

Adventures:  We took a family day trip to a mushroom farm.  Yep, a mushroom farm.  It was your Daddy's idea.  You hung out with Mommy in your ring sling the whole time, and you were happy as a clam until you decided to be hungry.  Little Prez and Miss Coco played outside while we went with Daddy on a tour of the mushroom laboratory where they are researching all kinds of cool things that mushrooms can do like create antibodies for infections and eat plastic.

Look at me, Mom!  I can sit up!

Love,

Mommy

Last week we tried a few new Whole 30 recipes: Burgers on Eggplant Buns from the Whole30 Cookbook, Slow Cooker Paleo Breakfast Pie, Chicken Chowder from the Whole 30 Cookbook, Sweet Potato Pancakes, and Avocado Chicken Salad.  The burgers were delicious, but the eggplant buns were soggy.  We'll have to try the mushroom or sweet potato buns next time.  The breakfast pie was good, but not amazing.  Same thing with the avocado chicken salad.  We liked it, but we love regular chicken salad, so it just didn't live up to the usual recipe.  The sweet potato pancakes were okay, but just fell apart.  This is probably because we were adapting a waffle recipe.  We'll have to try a different recipe next time.  The big winner was the chicken chowder from the Whole30 Cookbook.  We had it on the perfect fall day when soup is the best way to end the day.

This week, we have a few new recipes as well.  I'll let you know how they go next Monday!

Mission to Financial Freedom: April Budget Update

We had a budget before taking the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University course in January and February of this year,  But, we didn't really utilize it.  We didn't really follow it.  As we get further away from the class and closer to the end of the school year, I can see us starting to veer in the wrong direction.  I will say, though, that every year, near the end of the school year, we aren't as diligent at avoiding eating out and such as we get busier and busier with the dead week and finals week rush.

Despite that, we still managed to stay close to our budget and our tax refund was definitely a nice boon that came in by the end of April.

Our financial goals for April were:
  1. Put at least $2,000 in savings.  $3,200 > $2,000!!
  2. Be on or under budget for the month.   Only thanks to the extra tax return, but still.
  3. Finish and submit our taxes early.  Does April 14th count as early?  :)

When I look at the line items, I'm in no way surprised at the areas in which we were overbudget.

  • Food (groceries and restaurants) - Lots of things combined, plus a lack of diligence are the reason for this one.  ($100 over, yikes!)
  • Gas - I think this was just a timing thing.  ($30 over)
  • Parking - Totally my fault.  At 7 1/2 months pregnant, I just didn't want to walk close to a mile from free parking to my office.  ($15 over)
  • Dentist - Miss Coco needed to have a filling replaced unexpectedly, but luckily we had the extra funds to fit it into the cash flow for April.  ($85 over)
  • Household - I may have gone a little overboard in my couponing at the beginning of the month, which left nothing left over at the end of the month.  And you can't really go without things like toilet paper.  ($27 over)
There were a few other categories that we went a bit over on, but these were the ones that stood out to me.  Food was definitely an issue last month, and to be honest, I think it may be an issue in May as well.  We will need to be extra diligent this next month!  Parking should be resolved because I (hopefully) won't need to spend as much time at school now that's summer and teaching is done.  Mostly, we just need to get back to cash envelopes and keeping each other accountable.

With the extra money coming in from our tax return, we saved $3,200 in April.  This was transferred to a savings account where we've tagged some upcoming expenses that we want to be able to pay for up front.  At the end of April, our sinking funds were fully funded for: $1,000 emergency fund, Baby Girl Harvey delivery (assuming c-section), summer health insurance for Baby Girl Harvey, and moving expenses (we hope).  We are now adding to our secondary emergency fund.  If we are blessed with a birth without any complications, we'll be sending the secondary emergency funds straight to either our down payment for a home when we move or to pay off student loan debt.

Stay posted for our May financial goals!  Happy summer (almost)!
