Life Lately with Baby Prez

Dear Baby Prez,

I have gotten so behind on your updates!  So, we are skipping ahead to now.  You just turned 20 months old, and I am amazed every day at how much you are growing and learning!

Here are some updates on our life lately.

Such a good helper with yard work!
Milestones

Your milestones these days are definitely more cognitive skills than motor skills, but that's because you are already a pro at running like a crazy kid around the house, screaming at the top of your lungs, going down the slide, and so on.  One really cute new thing that you've been working on for the last few months is jumping.  You have finally figured out how to jump up and down, but it is a production every single time.  And you don't just jump up and down in place, you jump from one spot on the floor to another one a few feet away.  It's incredibly adorable.  Mostly, you jump when you are in a good mood and excited about something.  You are also trying to figure out how to jump off of inanimate objects like boxes, mommy or daddy, the end of your slide, and anything and everything else that will get you up off the ground a few inches.

Parade Fun at Oklahoma State's Homecoming last Fall!
Talking

Mommy was worried a few months ago because you weren't saying very many words, but I had nothing to worry about!

Your Words are:

No
Yes
Mom or Mama
Dad
Teddy
Banana (nay-nay)
Baby
More
Sit
Sock
Boot
Go
Slide
Car
Vroom vroom
Choo choo
Rharr (or some sort of dinosaur/lion growl)
Water (wah-wah)
Nose
Bye bye
Night night
Mermaid

You're also forming some multiple word phrases like "sit down" and "I want more", and you love to motion for people to come with you into another room or to sit down next to you.  The expression you use when you are trying to convince someone to do what you want them to do is priceless.  One of these days, I'll be quick enough to get a picture of it!

At your 18 month checkup, your were:

20 pounds 9 ounces
and
29 inches tall.

Mommy

Baby Prez - 15 Months

Dear Baby President,

It is just amazing how fast time flies.  You are now 15 months old, which means that this is the beginning of the second fall that you've been alive.

Stats: big boy

Health: This past month you had a fever and were sick and miserable for a few days, which was no fun for anyone.  You also had your first big tumble and bonk in the head, though I'm pretty sure it won't be the only one.  Otherwise, you've been healthy!

Social:  You got to see all of your grandparents this month, plus your Aunt Kiley!  You spent the weekend with Mimi and Grandad earlier in the month.  And then Aunt Kiley, Gramma, and Grandpa came to visit for Labor Day weekend.  You got to stay up late playing with their puppies.  Gundy even let you hug him!!

You're still playing nice with the other kids at daycare, and you even hug your friend, Nora.  Same thing at church.  You are such a good little boy.

Favorites:

Music!

You just love music. You've been dancing for months, but you're adding new moves all the time!  At Mimi's house, you like to play the grand piano, and you e even learned how to turn it on by yourself.  At home, you have your pick from two keyboards, a guitar toy, a xylophone, and several hand drums. You love them all!

Baby Prez: 10 Months

Dear Baby Prez,

Mommy has gotten way behind on your updates, but don't worry!  I've been paying lots of attention to my little man and has been enjoying every moment with you.

Milestones

At ten months, you had one of your most proud moments - you drank out of a straw!  Oh my man man, you were quite proud of yourself.  Gramma, Grandpa, and Aunt Kiley came to visit, and while we were out to eat, Aunt Kiley asked if you could have a drink of her water.  Mommy laughed and told her that she could try, but it wouldn't work.  Mommy was wrong.  You did it right away!  You figured it out!  And you were so excited and surprised when the water reached your mouth.

Now that you have teeth, we have to brush them every night.  You didn't really understand what was going on the first time, but you were such a good boy and let Daddy brush those two little teeth for you!  It didn't take long though, until you wanted to do the brushing all by yourself.

Weight:  At your last checkup (9 months), you weighed

Health:  Very health boy!

Sleep:  You've been sleeping through the night for months, and Mommy is still so very happy that you do.

Love,

Mommy

Finally Spring! {Five on Friday}

This week I am so thankful that spring is finally here!  And I'm excited to share some of the things I'm looking forward to this spring!

1. Easter Outfits for Baby Prez

I've been thinking about Baby President's Easter outfit for awhile now and drooling over this adorable little outfit from Target.

Need I say more?

2. Dyeing Easter Eggs

I need to pick up some egg dyeing kits this week so that we can dye some Easter eggs for Baby President's first Easter!  As he gets older, I want to incorporate more activities focused on Jesus's death and resurrection, but this year I'm focused on sensory activities.  Brightly colored Easter eggs should do the trick!  But there are so many options for Easter egg dyeing kits these days.  Of course, I'll go with Paas.  Because duh.

When I was growing up, we had the basic dye colors and if we wanted to do something fancy we drew on the eggs with crayons before dyeing them or used two different colors to make some cool colors like orange or purple!  Now in addition to the classic egg dye kit, we've got pre-made dye cups (cheating if you ask me), sparkling glitter kits (the little girl inside me loves this), tie dye kits (groovy!), sporty egg kits (Go Pokes!), 3-D explosion eggs (what?!), monster egg kits (I think an egg would make a great Mike Wazowski), volcanic eggsplosions, marble egg kits (this might be my favorite), neon Easter eggs, and even color snaps (which look easy and complicated all at the same time).

3. Walks with Baby President

Last summer, we were able to take Baby President to the Farmer's Market a few times!  It was fun to pick out produce there for his baby food.  When Baby Prez was 12 weeks old, we took him for the first time and bought acorn squash for his homemade baby food that week.

Baby President's 1st Farmers' Market - 2013

Isn't he just adorbs?

This year, we live close to two great parks!  Baby Prez has lots of swinging at the playground in his future!

4. Moscato

Specifically, Barefoot Moscato.  It's cheap, but so yummy!  Does moscato say spring to anyone else?

5. My Clothesline

Yes, that's right.  My clothesline.  When we moved into this house last fall, one of the things I didn't even think about was the clothesline in the backyard.  But then, our dryer plug didn't fit the outlet, so until we got the adapter, I used the clothesline.  In fact, I even line dried our clothes after we adapted the dryer!  And it's perfect for sunning Baby President's cloth diapers.

And now, it's getting warm enough to head out to the backyard and pin our clothes up on the line!

Baby Prez: 8- 9 Months

Dear Baby Prez,

This is your update for months 8 and 9!  And what a couple of months it was!  You are growing and developing like a superstar!  In the past few months, you have reached some milestones like learning to sit and crawl, experienced several firsts like flying on an airplane, and grown into quite the big boy.

Baby mohawk!

Milestones

Just a few weeks after you hit 7 months, you began sitting up on your own (for more than a few seconds).  Mommy was a little worried because all the books say that 7 months is the upper end for learning to sit up.  Sitting up was one of your coolest developments to date.  It completely changed how you interacted with objects and played.

But then...

Only a week or so later, you mastered the art of crawling!  Mommy definitely thought that she would have more of a gap in between sitting up and mobility!!!!  And she was a little scared of you crawling.  Not scared in the "Oh my goodness, I hope he doesn't get hurt" way, but more of the, "Oh no!  I have to watch him every single solitary second so he doesn't get into anything bad, gross, dangerous, dirty, etc." way.  So Mommy was quite surprised when crawling wasn't so bad at all.  In fact, close some doors and add a gate to block the kitchen, and crawling was great.  Instead of just crying or falling over trying to get a new toy, you could just crawl over and start playing with it!

But then...

Only a few days later, you began using the furniture to pull yourself into a standing position.  And Mommy, said, "Oh No!" because now you really do have to be watched every second.  And even though you figured out how to stand, and were quite proud of yourself, it took you awhile to figure out how to get down from standing without just falling over.

And then...

Well actually, around the same time as crawling, you got your very first tooth!  And your second tooth!  It was about three weeks of new developments and accomplishments every time we turned around.  The first few days while that first tooth was cutting through your gum and growing in were pretty tough, but you made it!

And then...

You learned to wave!  You wave at everything and everyone from the puppies to the ceiling fan, from Mommy & Daddy to your toys.  It's pretty much the most adorable thing ever.

Your "Firsts"

Beyond your developmental firsts of first time sitting up, first time crawling, first time standing, and first tooth you also experienced more firsts!

In about a week's time, you had your first illnesses - the flu bug, a cold, and an ear infection.  One right after the other in January.  First it was the flu bug.  Mommy got sick, so Daddy took over while Mommy felt miserable, but then the next day, Daddy started feeling sick.  So we called Mimi.  You went to Mimi's house for a few days, and Mommy and Daddy hoped that you wouldn't get sick.  But no.  Instead, not only did you get sick, but we also passed the bug to everyone at Mimi's house.  About three days after Mommy got sick, Mommy and Daddy also went to Mimi's house to take care of you and everyone else that was sick.  It was not the best week of your life...for anyone involved.  This earned you the affectionate nickname: plague rat.  And you are my favorite little plague rat.  Right after you got over the flu bug, you caught a cold.  Poor baby.  And right after that, an ear infection.  Thank goodness for the pink medicine (i.e. antibiotics).

You also experienced your very first airplane rides.  We were all very sad because your Daddy's aunt passed away, so we traveled to Pennsylvania for the memorial service.  And yes, we traveled by plane.  Before the trip, Mommy did lots of research about flying with babies, and the research paid off.  You were a very good boy through security, all of the flights, and even while we were delayed on the tarmac.  In fact, you slept through the majority of our four flights.  Mommy and Daddy sure are blessed with an amazing baby -- You!

You also got to meet many of your cousins on Daddy's side of the family.  Your Mimi has five siblings, so there were lots and lots of cousins through their kids and their kids' kids.  You were the baby though, and that meant that you were in high demand.  You got passed around and cuddled and tickled and cooed at and loved on.  Baby Prez, always remember that there is no measure for the love of family and that family is always a priority (right after God and your wifey).

During the same trip, we stayed in a hotel with you for the very first time.  I think you missed home, but you also got sick the second night we were there, which meant that you cried.  All.  Night.  Long.  You had been sleeping through the night pretty well since December (6 1/2 months), so not sleeping through the night was unusual.  And not sleeping at all was crazy.  Mommy got about two hours of sleep that night, and Daddy got zero sleep that night.  By about 3 or 4AM (and a hour and a half before we needed to leave for the airport), your forehead felt too hot.  Oh no!  A fever!  Luckily, your Daddy is a hero.  Despite getting no sleep, he ventured out in the middle of the night to find you some baby advil.

So, in one trip, you had your first plane ride, first hotel room, and first fever, and you met many new people.

Another new experience for you is daycare.  In January, you started to go to daycare twice a week, right next door.  It has been so nice to be able to walk you from door to door in about a minute.  Mommy was a little nervous about doing daycare, but Mommy and Daddy knew that Mommy needed some extra time to work on her dissertation and other schoolwork.  And aren't all mom a little worried on that first morning of daycare?  But daycare has been great.  You have so much fun with Lisa and the kids.  You even have a best friend, Henry.  Henry is not quite a year older than you, but still the closest in age to you.  Since he can walk, when you are playing in the walker, Henry will bring you toys and play with the walker toys with you.  You also play patty-cake with him!  And Nora, who is about a year older than you, has a little crush on you.  She will give you hugs and bring you toys.

Right before you turned nine months, we started on table foods.  And at nine months you still weren't very interested.  We tried bananas, macaroni noodles, grape halves, etc.  But you thought they were just for playing.  (A sneak preview of your next update is that you're starting to like table foods!)

More 8-9 Month Highlights

In January, Mommy and Baby Prez traveled to Oklahoma to visit Gramma, Grandpa, and Aunt Kiley.  You were spoiled while Mommy worked like a crazy woman to catch up on schoolwork.  You even got to watch your first basketball game.  Even better, you got to meet Pistol Pete!

Go Cowgirls!

And in February, you got to attend a birthday party for the first time.  Along with a the party, you got to go to a roller skating rink (no, you didn't get to skate) and see a balloon for the first time.  Went to a birthday party for the first time at the skating rink for cousin Chanel

At your 9 month checkup, your were:

20 pounds 9 ounces
and
29 inches tall.

Learning physics with Daddy

Snow!

Good night

Mommy and Daddy can't wait to see all of your new accomplishments in the next few months and beyond!  You are a very special little man, Baby President.

Love,

Mommy

Baby Prez: 26 Weeks {1st Thanksgiving}

Dear Baby Prez,

All bundled up & ready to travel!

Weight:    According to a different bathroom scale this week, you still seem to be about 18 pounds.

Health:   You are a healthy boy.  Now it is Mommy's turn to get a cold, but hopefully you won't catch it!

As of Sunday, you are officially teething.  Drool is your middle name, and you chew on anything and everything you can get your hands on.  Unfortunately, you have started getting fussy.  You haven't been fussy very much til now, so I guess Mommy and Daddy just had it coming.

Sleep:  The story here is still the same.  You wake up about once a night if you don't have a dream feed.  Your schedule was all mixed up this week because we were traveling for Thanksgiving, but now that we are back home, we are trying to get to back into your routine.

Social:  You were pretty much the star of the show at both of our Thanksgiving celebrations . . . as usual.  More on that later.

Diet:  This week, you tried mashed potatoes for the first time since it is such a quintessential Thanksgiving food.  It is pretty much the only food that you didn't like very much.  You didn't hate it, but you certainly did not love it much.  Otherwise, you are eating three meals a day, plus breastmilk bottles in between meals.

Likes:   Toes, people, your walker, jumping, walks around the neighborhood

Mommy's cousin, Jacey, brought a Johnny Jumper to Grandma's house for you.  We set you up in the kitchen doorway, and you jumped and jumped and jumped.  You probably spent a whole hour jumping!

This week you learned . . .

To help Mommy put your clothes on.  You will push your arms and legs through their respective holes; Mommy just makes sure that you are all lined up.

Milestones:

First Thanksgiving

This week we traveled far and wide to see family for Thanksgiving.  First, we headed over the river and through the prairie to Grandma Vicki and Grandpa Tom's house.  We let you sleep until the last minute, and at about 6am, we transferred a sleeping Baby President to the car, and we left for Oklahoma - Mommy, Daddy, Baby President, and all three puppies (in Mommy's Honda Civic.  Yes, we looked like a clown car.) You visited Eskimo Joe's for the first time when we arrived and Daddy tried their famous cheese fries that have been endorsed by both President Bush #1 and President Bush #2.  Then, Grandma got to show you off to her office friends!  You smiled at everyone and told some very interesting stories!  The rest of the day we hung out with Aunt Kiley, Grandpa, and Grandma (once she got home from work).  They all love you so much and miss you so much!  Aunt Kiley especially enjoyed cuddling with you while you slept.  And Grandpa Tom and you took some naps together in the recliner...classic sleep photo.  (Doesn't everyone have these?)  I'm pretty sure we have this exact same photo with me and my sister when we were babies.  Unfortunately, Mommy can't find the picture she took of this.  But, it happened.  Twice.

On Thursday, Grandma's house was full of family for Thanksgiving.  You got to see everyone!  Your little cousins were enamored by you.  They wanted to see you and play with you and bring you toys.  It was just adorable.  Next year, there definitely be chaos when you are walking and can play with them more.  We will have three little boys under the age of 5 running around!  You enjoyed the day and were happy to hang out with everyone!  Later Mommy and Daddy ventured out to do some Black "Friday" shopping (even though it wasn't Friday yet) with Grandma and Aunt Kiley.

The "young adult" table: Jagger, Jacey, Josh, Elise, Kiley, Alex, Jared, & Jay

Birthday Celebration for Jay & Jagger

Jay & Jagger loved you!
"Secrets"
After breakfast at IHOP, it was on the road again back to Nebraska to have Thanksgiving with Mimi, Grandad, and Chanel.  We also took you on a walk to the park, and you got to play on the swings for the first time.  You thought it was so much fun...until you didn't.  You got to sit up at the table like a big boy and you liked being a part of everything, but you weren't a fan of the potatoes we made you.  You got to hang out with Chanel and Mimi while Mommy and Daddy went to a birthday party for one of Daddy's high school friends.  Mimi reported that you were a very good boy while we were gone.
