Clutter Busting Challenge Week #1

During the month of May, Money Saving Mom is challenging readers to a Clutter Busting Challenge.  The challenge is to find 7 things to get rid of each day.

This challenge has been much much more difficult than last month's 30-Day Housecleaning Challenge.  I think I was more successful last month because each day there was a specific task to complete.  With the Clutter Busting Challenge, I am definitely not as consistent.  I think there are a few reasons.  First the logical part of me says, 'okay, Elise, all you really have to do is get rid of 217 things', so in my mind I should just be trying to get to the final number.  In other words, there's no reason to add more than 7 things to the list each day because I could just wait and add those tomorrow.  Lazy?  Yes, I know.  I admit it.  The second reason I think I've done poorly is that I don't know where to start.  I have plenty of junk that needs gotten rid of, but trying to decide what to go through is a challenge.  Silly?  Probably.

Last week, thanks to some help from my sister and mom, I was able to pack a couple of bags worth of donations and get through some basement boxes.  I'm not sure how many items that totaled, but it was progress.

This week, instead of trying to do 7 things per day, I'm going to try to get rid of 50 items total.  That's 7 items for each of 7 days, plus a bonus item.  Since I'm trying to organize my basement as well as clean out one of our dressers to put in the nursery, my plan is the following:

May 7th - 2 basement boxes
May 8th - 2 dresser drawers
May 9th - 2 dresser drawers
May 10th - 2 dresser drawers
May 11th - 1 basement box
May 12th - 1 basement box
May 13th - 1 basement box

I've started out well today.  Lucky for the challenge, I had to go through some boxes in an attempt to find my birth certificate, so that I can finally change my name.  Lazy?  Yep.  Oops.  Sometimes those little details get past me.  During my search, I can across:

Trash: 2 phone books & 1 conference binder
Donate: 2 books

This evening, I also sold two nightstands that I had listed on Craigslist that were cluttering up the master bedroom (they used to be in the upstairs TV room, now known as the nursery).  So, as of today, I've found 8 items out of 50.  Yay!
